Custer State Park have very nice "dry" campgrounds. We stayed at Stockade Lake North and it was very nice. There are some excellent sites and there are some close together. There is a small loop and the outside sites are very nice. The inside might be good for three or four families camping together. We also stayed at Legion Lake for two days and won't again. Too close to the road and loud. We went through Stockade Lake South and it was possibly even nicer than the North sites. The website has pics that make it easier to get an idea. Where we stayed had a great little jaunt to the lake through the woods. These campgrounds are located just inside the park and close to the town of Custer. That was very nice making it easy to go eat or go to the store. And it gave great "fast" access to all the sites on US 16? 18? just west of town. It heads north to Rushmore at 60 and it is just a few minutes to get there or you can take the scenic routes through the Needles highway. This is a great area.

Received from Karl M for visit in May 2005
