Not the best place. There are two campgrounds - Great Falls and Whitetail. There are both open and wooded sites, as well as some electric sites. The Great Falls campground is along the Illinois River and has mostly open and electric sites. The sites are small and very close together. The best sites are: 2,4,12, and 16. There is not alot the do in the park besides watching barges and pleasure boats go by and maybe do some fishing. I also noticed that the shower building was not kept clean. Like many Illinois State Parks, there is an alcohol ban, but because there is not much enforcement of rules, I was able to enjoy without being hassled. Starved Rock State Park is a much better choice for this area.

We arrived at the park on Saturday afternoon and followed the signs to the campground which led us into Great Falls camping area. Here there is a wooded section of non-electric sites and an open section of 30 or so electric sites, many on the Illinois river. All of the electric sites were reserved when we arrived, so we selected a wooded site in the section off the river. The site was nice, but a bit muddy and could have used some gravel. This was the same for most of the sites in the wooded section. The sites were also on the small side and just barely accomodated our popup. Not the place for larger trailers, etc. and the area was mostly camped in by tents and pop-ups. We were fairly close to the shower house with flush toilets, but unfortunately it was very dirty, with paper everywhere. I did use the toilets on a few occasions, but would never consider showering there. Thankfully we were only there for 1 night and could go without showering. Overall, the campground did not have a well kept up feel to it. The staff did not seem to keep the shower house clean, nor did they enforce any rules. We saw people dumping there grey water right on to the ground and there was a dog that barked constantly until 9:30 PM and then again at 8 AM the next morning. The staff would not take any action. Some of the good things...There is a great ice cream place walking distance from the campground. It was nice to have a cone at night around the campfire. The location of the park is good, a really pretty spot on the river, you can watch barges go through the Marseilles locks, and the I&M canal bike trail is just a mile or so away. Right before we left on Sunday we did discover an entire separate campground called White Tail further in the park. We will stay there next time, the sites were more spread put and everything seemed a bit cleaner and more private.
