As others have noted, a beautiful, scenic, clean and comfortable State Park campground in the Southern AZ desert. The Caverns are definitely worth the visit, and the CG is convenient to other attactions such as Bisbee, Tombstone and Elgin. Good hiking trails adjacent, paved roads and pads, flush toilets and clean, hot showers. Dump station available, but no sewer hook-ups at campsites. Electric and water at each site tho. Unless there are fire restrictions, the group fire-rings are available (CG supplies the firewood!) and charcoal grilling IS allowed. An absolute bargain for $25 per night!

A nice, new (opened in 1999) state park campground in the high Chihuahuan desert at 4600' elevation. Features: - 62 paved sites with picnic tables - Full hookups (electric and water) - Flush toilets and hot showers - Dump station The sites are nicely spaced among mesquite trees which add a bit of seclusion to many of the sites. The campground is a 5 minute walk to the Visitor's Center which offers info, museum, gift shop and cavern tours. NO campfires or charcoal fires are permitted. The campground is first come - first served (no reservations).

Pros: Beautiful setting in the Sonoran Desert. Quiet and relaxing. Breath taking night skies with zero light pollution. Cons: Not the place for those who expect a swimming pool and and shuffleboard courts. A place we keep going back to even though we haven't been back to the caverns themselves.

We just returned from our first camping trip to Kartchner Caverns State Park. We enjoyed out visit. It is a desert campground, meaning, very little shade. The campsites are spaced nicely apart from your neighbor. Showers and restrooms are very clean. The stars are spectacular at night. The campground is in close proximity to many unique Arizona landmarks and national monuments. We did not visit the caves this trip, as we have done that in our pre-camping days but if you get the chance, don't pass it up as they are spectacular!! The only downside is that they do NOT allow charcoal grills nor campfires. :-( We think this campground is a hidden gem.
