Yellowstone State Park is about an hour southwest of Madison. Located in the middle of LaFayette County. It's isolated in the sense that it's surrounded by miles of farmland with the closest town of Fayette a ten minute drive away. Many winding roads it took to get there. But it was worth the trip!
The lake is the main attraction and offers boating, fishing and a sandy beach for swimming. Cross the dam and you'll find a cliff that invites you to climb it. My six year old son and I made the climb in spite of apprehensions from my wife!
A brand new shower facility has been built between sites 48 and 51 in the west campground. Another attraction is the bat houses built throughout the park. Stop at dusk at the amphitheater to see the bats depart for the night or get up early and watch them return at dawn. The benefit is virtually no misquotios at the campground. The park also offers mountaing bike trails and hiking trails as well as snowmobiling trails and ice fishing as Yellowstone is open for winter camping.
There are 128 camping sites plus 6 group sites. 40 sites offer electrical hookups. There are showers and flush toilets as well as pit toilets. This is a good weekend camp destination. I don't think I could spend a week here, but that's just me! It is a very nice park. BEST ELECTRICAL SITES:
30
GOOD ELECTRICAL SITES (non-reservable) : 121, 91, 95, 93, 111, 128, 108 (81, 83 & 87 together if you're a group), 31 thru 36 non-reservables are all nice
